This wasn’t exactly an innovation since the designers of the experimental Xerox Alto (which Apple’s engineers copied liberally) also chose to display text as black on a white background. No, they weren’t, and one of the Mac’s most significant design decisions back in 1984 was an interface that put black text and graphics on a white screen, just as had been done in print for hundreds of years. Have you ever wondered why, if Dark Mode is such a revelation, it took Apple 35 years after the first Macintosh to revert to the look of the light-on-dark CRT-based monitors of the Apple ][ and IBM PC era? Were those green-on-black and amber-on-black screens really so wonderful? Apple IIe with 2 Disk II drives and Apple Monitor II by Mystère Martin is licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0 For months after Mojave shipped, our Watchlist items dutifully reported that this app and that app now supported Dark Mode or had tweaked their support for it in some important way. Dark Mode works with built-in apps that come with your Mac, and third-party apps can adopt it, too.Īnd third-party apps have adopted it in droves. Switch it on in the General pane in System Preferences to create a beautiful, distraction-free working environment that’s easy on the eyes-in every way. The subtle colors and fine points of your content take center screen as toolbars and menus recede into the background. Apple even gives it the top spot on the macOS product page, saying:ĭark Mode is a dramatic new look that helps you focus on your work. #1669: OS security updates, ambiguity of emoji, small business payments with Melio, Twitter now Xĭark Mode is the marquee feature of macOS 10.14 Mojave.#1670: Arc Web browser hits 1.0 release, “Do You Use It?” polls about Apple features.#1671: Apple Q3 2023 earnings, new Beats headphones and earbuds, Stage Manager adoption rate, do you use Spotlight?.1672: The hidden power of Google Sheets, Launchpad usage levels, Emergency SOS via satellite in the Maui fires, do you use proxy icons?.1673: macOS 13.5.1, watchOS 9.6.1, copy data from Web tables, what Spotlight is used for, do you use Apple’s Weather app?.MacOS offers a better experience, with a complete implementation of dark mode across first-party menus and applications. Still, one operating system is darker than the other. We are fans ourselves, and while using a “light” mode theme doesn’t make our eyes bleed, we prefer the subtle look of dark mode. We’re thrilled to see MacOS and Windows embrace the darkness. Perhaps third-party apps just need time to catch up. That’s a bummer, and it often feels as if the developers could do more to support dark mode. Very few apps offer an official alternative theme, and fewer still switch to match an operating system’s default. It may be light, or it may be dark Spotify and Discord are two popular apps that go for a dark theme by default. Comparing OneNote, Slack, WhatsApp, Evernote, and Fotor side-by-side, we found that Evernote was the only app that switched to dark mode automatically, and only on MacOS. We must again nitpick Microsoft’s approach, though, for a reason that’s as simple as it is silly. Safari and Edge are fundamentally different in feel, but the dark mode version of each is faithful to the ‘light mode’ look. All context and option menus appear to render just as they should, offering a high-contrast experience that looks slick.
